Osun Osogbo Festival, is a river goddess cultural celebration. It takes place annually for two weeks every August. The venue is Osogbo. And Osogbo is one of the Traditional/cultural towns in the southern part of Nigeria. Historically, this Festival which started about 700 years ago is associated with: Fertility, water, purity, love and sensuality. It usually begins with traditional cleansing of the town of evil [Iwopopo]. Then, three days of lightening 600-year-old, 16-points lamp[Ina Olujumerindinlogun], which is Followed by Iboriade, process by which the communities, including the attendees, are being Blessed through the crowns of all the past kings of Town[Ataojas] by the current Ataoja of Osogbo[The King], Arugba[Calabash carrier], Yeye Osun[Head of Osun priestesses] & others. This usually followed by sacrifice to the River Goddess[Osun] By traditional provision carried by ‘Arugba’ also known as the ‘Calabash carrier’.
Arugba, traditionally, is votary virgin and Goddess in her own right. She prays and blesses the people as she leads them, with the calabash on her head to the river for sacrifice. This traditional festival is known worldwide. It is attended by Millions all over the world, including people from: Brazil, Cuba, Spain, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and US.
