BRIEF DESCRIPTION

BRIEF HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY OF WEST INDIES
West Indies is a conglomerate of large group of islands that separate Atlantic Ocean from Caribbean Sea. Historically, it is belief to have been discovered by the European explorer, Christopher Columbus in 1492. According to some sources, he named the islands “the Indies” because he thought he had finally reached Asia.

The islands that make up West Indies includes: Bahamas to the north. Greater Antilles, to the center and the Lesser Antilles to southeast.

The Bahamas, in general, consists of over 3,000 islands and reefs. And the Greater Antilles consists of big islands like: Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico.

The Lesser Antilles, on the contrary, consists of only into two groups, the Leeward Islands and Windward Islands.

Preferably, nowadays, West Indies nations preferred to be called “the Caribbean” The Caribbean consists of many culture-rich island countries, dependencies and territories. They are the premier tourist destinations on the planet.
