BRIEF DESCRIPTION

GHANA AS A NATION
Ghana is one of the English speaking nations in West Africa. It is officially known as the Republic of Ghana. It is located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean. The neighboring countries are: Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Togo, Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean. Ghana is the 82nd−largest country in the world. And 33rd−largest country in Africa by land mass. Its land mass is about 238,535 km2, with 2,093 kilometers of international land borders.

Marriage plays a significant role in Ghana`s Culture. Like most of the West African countries, Marriage is not just an association of two seemingly compatible people but alignment and association of soul of the community in which families bound in affection and respect. And the purpose of marriage under Ghana custom is basically to have children.

In ancient time, like many other African countries too, there are many ways to choose partners in Ghana. Some community’s parents choose partners for their children; some even betrothed their daughters before they were old enough to marry. But nowadays, more freedom is given to the children to chose their husband and wives. Marriage in Ghana involves the presentation of gift like: drinks money etc to the bride’s family, especially the mother. But the money in question varies from one community to another. And the purpose is to show his gratitude for allowing their daughter to be part of his (the bridegroom’s) family.

Historically, Ghana hosts one of the most powerful kingdoms/empires in West Africa. Greatest amongst them is the Akan Kingdom of Ashanti. Ghana became British Empire in early-20th century, specifically, 1902, and became independent In 1957. And economically, farming plays a major role in Ghana`s GDP. They plant tree crops like: Cocoa, kola nuts, rubber etc. And others crops like: grains, yams, sugar cane, tobacco, cotton, corn, yams, cassava and other root crops; but in general, Cocoa is one of their economic products.

Though, Cocoa plantation is seen virtually in every part of Ghana, it is more prominent in the forested areas of the country like: Ashanti Region, Central Region, Eastern Region, Brong-Ahafo Region, Western Region, Volta Region and other places where rainfall is above 1,000 millimeters per annum. Cocoa has a long production cycle. It is far longer than many other tropical crops. New hybrid cocoa varieties need about 5 to 6 years to produce, and 10 to 15 years to reach its full bearing potential.
