BRIEF DESCRIPTION

MALAWI AND MARRIAGE CEREMONIES
Malawi is one of the countries in southeast Africa. It is formerly known as Nyasaland and officially as Republic of Malawi. It is bordered by Zambia, Tanzania Mozambique and separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. The population is about 16,777,547 in 2013.

According to their custom, “Malowolo ceremony” begins when both a boy and a girl tell their parent of their intention to engage or marry. After this, a date will be set for both families to meet for familiarization. And probably agree on the bride price, or lobola . This price, though, may vary from one community to another, can be inform of cash or cattle. And the purpose for the bridegroom is to show appreciation to his wife-to be`s family for allowing their daughter to be part of his family.

After this meeting, according to some sources, the families will inform their village chiefs with presentations like: money, live chickens etc, Then preparation for engagement known locally as “Chinkhoswe” begins; mostly, at the bride’s family home. The bride’s family assumes the responsibility of planning and coordinating the event.

Usually, the ceremony is kicked off at the eve with all night dance and drink by relatives and friends from both families. At the ceremony both parents, the village chiefs and the community endorse and pray for the couples as due. And after this, couples interested in white wedding may proceed.
