MAYA ANGELOU- A FORMIDABLE POET/ AMERICAN LEADERSHIP CULTURE
Maya Angelou, one of the greatest Poet and Actress world has ever known, was born and named Marguerite Johnson by Bailey and Vivian in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Bailey, the father, was a naval dietician/doorman. And her mother, Vivian, was a nurse and realtor.

Maya had a traumatic childhood. According to the history, at the age seven, Maya was allegedly raped by her mother's boyfriend. And shortly after she let out to the story, the man was murdered. And because Maya thought it was her fault, refused to speak to anyone, except her brother, for four years. She had one brother and the name is Bailey Jr. They both spent most of their early childhood being shuffled between St. Louis and Stamps, Arkansas, where their grandmother lived.

Maya graduated from George Washington high school in San Francisco in 1945. She became a single mother, afterwards. The name of her son was Clyde Bailey "Guy" Johnson. To support this son, she worked at various places including: night clubs, Creole cafe, body shops etc. And became the first African-American woman to conduct cable cars in San Francisco.
She eventually, married Tosh Angelos, a Greek-American sailor, in 1950. And changed her new surname to Angelou In 1945.

In 1959 she moved to Brooklyn, New York, to join the Harlem Writers Guild where she grew to become the northern coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), at the request of Martin Luther King Jr. And from 1961 to 1962, Angelou became the associate editor of English-language news weekly in the Middle East, the Arab Observer, in Cairo, Egypt and feature editor of the African Review in Ghana.

She returned to the U.S. in 1970. And was appointed to the Bicentennial Commission by President Gerald R. Ford. And later named to the Commission for International Woman of the Year by President Jimmy Carter.
In Literary and entertainment world, Maya Angelo was a guru. She wrote many poems. And her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" in 1970 was a blast. In 1971, she also wrote the original screenplay and musical score for the film, "Georgia, Georgia".

As part of her life achievement, she became the first African-American female director in Hollywood. And in 1974 she directed her debut film "All Day Long" in 1974. Apart from this, in 1973, she was nominated for Tony awards, for her Broadway acting debut in "Look Away", and her performance in the miniseries "Roots" in 1977.

In 1981, she became a lifetime Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. And at the request of President-elect Bill Clinton, in 1993 she read her poem, “On the Pulse of the Morning,” at his inauguration. Maya Angelou is a multi-linguistic and multi-talented genus . She speaks fluently: French, Italian, Arabic, Spanish, and Fanti West African language.
Like all mortals, world eventfully lost her ingenuity on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the age of 86 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina...
